Alabama Women in Jazz Festival in Huntsville, Alabama
Alabama Women in Jazz Festival
Hello! I’m Patrice Bivins, founder of a new program in Huntsville called, “Alabama Women in Jazz”. We are presenting the first women in jazz festival on Saturday, September 19 in downtown Huntsville. This is an exciting time of year, and I’m excited to share all of the details about this event with you, but first … a bit about me and my journey to jazz.
My jazz story
I grew up here in Huntsville and started out in gymnastics in elementary school and competed through college level. So how did I get to music, you ask? My mother suggested that I take piano lessons at the age of 11 and while I was not very enthused, without any “back talk” as we would say in those days, I took my lessons. My playing and learning lasted 5 years plus, and at the age of 13, I began to play for some of those rocking gospel junior choirs at several churches here in Huntsville, and played clarinet in band. It came to a point that my mother could not afford the lessons anymore (but to this day, I’m so thankful to her for encouraging me and providing me with the teacher that inspired my love of music.) My piano teacher was a lady who uplifted my confidence and character. To make this story even shorter, I left Huntsville and upon returning in the 2000s, decided to start Valley Arts and Entertainment, a 501c3 nonprofit organization created to support youth in music and to assist with funding through a scholarship for disadvantaged students. More recently, we created the Alabama Women in Jazz Program to support female jazz musicians throughout Alabama.
I’ll let you in on a
little BIG secret. The live music scene here in Huntsville is one of a kind, and the Alabama Women in Jazz Festival won’t disappoint for anyone who enjoys live entertainment. The Jazz Festival features: Jazz in P!nk, Doreen Ketchens, Heather Petero and the UAH Jazz Ensemble.
You’re sure to enjoy an experience unlike any other jazz festival in Huntsville when you attend our event- the Alabama Women in Jazz Festival 2015 on September 19 in Big Spring Park East. These talented women come from all walks of life and various areas inside and outside of Alabama. This is a great time to explore Huntsville and enjoy the pleasant fall temperatures.
Performing is JAZZ IN P!NK, a dynamic group of super talented females who have played Monterey Jazz Festival and more. JAZZ IN P!NK founder, Gail Jhonson has two Black Women in Jazz awards, and has been named The First Lady of Smooth Jazz. The Grammy-nod pianist leads the group along with Doreen Ketchens, dubbed “Lady Louie,” and one of the world’s greatest living jazz clarinetists, who brings the best of New Orleans.
